How-to Guide to Moving When Pregnant Without Losing Your Mind

Even when you’re not pregnant, moving is stressful and hectic. But when you’re expecting, the moving process can be doubly stressful and hectic. But you don’t have to lose your mind – follow these tips for a smooth move.

Get Organized

Organization is the foundation of any good move, and that’s no less true when you’re expecting. Procrastination will only serve to stress you out further, and you don’t want that. The longer you take to organize, the less chaotic moving day will be. Come up with a plan of what needs to be done and a timeline in which you have to do it. Space tasks out as nicely as you can so you’re not doing too much on any given day.

Pack Early

The first things to pack should be the things you don’t use every day, such as items in the garage, attic, basement and storage areas. From off-season clothing to holiday décor, pack these things up first and set them aside. As the move gets closer, you can start tackling rooms that have more of your everyday items in them.

Label, Label, Label

When you have “pregnancy brain,” it can be tough to remember what goes where. So, to help yourself out in the new place when it comes time to unpack, make sure you label every box in detail. Using a marker, write out the contents of the box as well as the destination room. This will also help your movers locate the appropriate room as well.

Ask For Help

You can’t do it all alone. In fact, you shouldn’t. Your primary job is to protect your baby, so do as little physical work as possible and ask for help when given. If someone wants to watch your other children for a few hours so you can pack, take them up on it. If they offer to pack boxes and organize them, let them.

Asking for help also means hiring professional movers to not only transport your stuff but help you pack it all as well. You shouldn’t be doing any heavy lifting anyway. Overall, be open to receiving help from anyone who offers, from neighbors to family.

Stick to worrying about the small things. You can pack up kitchen gadgets and clothing on your own. But for anything heavy, such as books and appliances, leave it to the pros.

Learn About the New Neighborhood

Your goal should be to hit the ground running once you move in. You will need to quickly get acclimated to a new daily routine, and a big part of that is knowing all about the neighborhood.  Research the coffee shops, grocery stores, restaurants, pediatricians, OB GYNs, walking trails, support groups and fitness classes for pregnant women.

The sooner you can locate these resources, the faster you can hop right in.

Find a Doctor

If you’re moving far enough away that you have to get a new doctor, start researching as soon as possible. Ask your current doctor for recommendations on doctors in the new city. Have them transfer your medical charts and history to the new doctors so you don’t have to worry about it. Do the same with pediatricians for your other children as well as for the future of your unborn child.

Prepare the Nursery

Prepare the nursery first thing. You can’t move into your new home without a designated space for the baby. Get help with painting the nursery as well as filling it with all the furniture you will need, such as changing table, crib and more. You want to be well prepared in case the baby comes early.

Take Care of Yourself

Moving is no time to let self-care fall by the wayside. Pamper yourself, take frequent breaks, stay hydrated and take all the help you can get. Moving is not easy – for anyone – so know your limits and treat yourself well. Get a massage, take in a movie, soak in a warm bubble bath – whatever it takes to recharge and reconnect.
